The Graduate Centerโ€™s Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) is seeking contributing writers for our blog, Visible Pedagogy, now entering its second year. Currently, we are looking for 5 writers who are interested in writing a series of 4 posts during the Fall 2017 semester, on topics related to teaching and learning at CUNY. Each post should be between 750-850 words, and reflect on ideas, questions, and opportunities youโ€™ve encountered working in CUNY classrooms.

The choice of topic is open, but the proposed series of posts should be linked by some unifying theme or rationale. For instance, new instructors might reflect on their first semester of teaching, while more experienced ones might be interested in thinking anew about some aspect of their pedagogy, including their instructional methods, assessment strategies, and use of digital technology, or in describing their approach to a new course. Alternatively, there might be particular issue within higher education that writers would like to explore within the context of their classroom practices. Proposals for contributions in creative formats (i.e. podcasts) are also encouraged. Some of the topic areas we are especially interested in covering:

  • The STEM classroom

  • Teaching in CUNYโ€™s community colleges

  • Teaching online/hybrid courses

  • Teaching with Open Educational Resources (OERs)

  • Connecting teaching and research

We are looking for writers able to commit to publishing 4 posts between September and December, 2017 (with the potential for reappointment in the Spring). Writers must also be interested in producing public-facing writing appropriate for a general audience, and willing to engage in the editorial process with TLC Assistant Director Elizabeth Alsop, which might involve 1-2 rounds of revisions. Interested applicants are welcome to review previous contributions to the โ€œReflective Practiceโ€ series here to get a sense of the siteโ€™s scope, style, and tone.

Interested applicants should email the following materials to tlc@gc.cuny.edu by Friday, September 8th:

  • a 250-500 word description of your proposed series of posts, its rationale, and your reasons for wanting to write it

  • a sample of your non-academic writing (preferably, a previous blog post or other public-facing writing on a digital platform), not to exceed 2 pages

  • a brief 2-page CV that includes your previous teaching experience

Writers will receive an honorarium of $1000. In addition, they will have the chance to participate in public conversations about teaching at CUNY; to share their work with a community of fellow instructors; and to contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning in an open, networked space. Selected writers will be asked to meet with Assistant Director, Elizabeth Alsop, to determine a publishing schedule. TLC Staff will also be available to provide training in WordPress, if writers are not already familiar with the platform.
