TLC Workshops: Accessibility and Visual Culture and Teaching with Media

During the week of March 27th, the Teaching and Learning Center will host two workshops, both on Zoom.

More details are below.

Accessibility and Visual Culture

March 27th – 4:00-5:30 pm, On Zoom
Registration: http://cuny.is/tlc-spring-23
Hosted by Molly Bauer, Pedro Cabello del Moral, and Luke Waltzer

This workshop will introduce participants to the guidelines of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and will share practical strategies for designing accessible teaching materials, with a focus on visual and material culture. Topics will include offering multiple avenues for accessing visual information, developing alternative text for images, and varying opportunities for direct engagement with artworks and museums. This workshop will also consider how much of the discourse surrounding viewership and audience of visual materials often assumes able-bodied and neurotypical subjectivity without accounting for alternative experiences of these media.

Teaching with Media

March 29th – 12:00-1:30 pm, On Zoom
Registration: http://cuny.is/tlc-spring-23
Hosted by Pedro Cabello del Moral

This workshop is aimed at expanding the ways we use video in our classrooms. It will showcase Open Educational Resources (OER) for assignments in which students can comment on videos and create short audiovisual essays in response to class topics.

We will explore user-friendly software (both online and offline) that can be used in courses across the disciplines. Attendees will learn the basic functions of programs that are designed to annotate video and edit films, combining audio and images from different sources. These are versatile technologies that offer a range of options for virtual, in-person, and hybrid courses.
