Launch Party, May 8th! Celebrating Two Recent TLC Publications

On Friday, May 8th, the Teaching and Learning Center will celebrate the publication of two recent projects: Do not ask me to remain the same: Resocializing Reading at CUNY and Showing Up, Slowing Down, Letting Go: Reflections on parenting and pedagogy. Developed by current TLC fellows Jeff Voss and Kristi Riley, these collections offer critical reflections from CUNY educators on un/learning how to teach, read, write, and parent.

Do not ask me to remain the same is a collection of ten interviews with CUNY faculty, graduate students, and undergrads on their experiences un/learning and teaching how to read at CUNY. Jeff will be joining Destry Maria Sibley, Olivia Wood, Finley Miller, Oriana Mejías Martínez, and Asilia Franklin-Phipps in conversation as they reflect on their experience teaching reading and writing throughout CUNY.

Showing Up, Slowing Down, Letting Go is a collection of essays written by current and former GC students–with copy editing support from Patrick Deduaw–about the ways pedagogy and parenting inform each other. These pieces explore how technology, gender norms, crises, and transformative relationships with our students and families shape our approaches to teaching and learning. Kristi will facilitate a conversation with contributors Luis Escamilla Frias, Anke Geertsma, Victoria Murray, Sam O’Hana, and Destry Maria Sibley about their contributions and advice for parenting and non-parenting CUNY educators.

The event will start at 4pm, in Room 3317. After two panel discussions facilitated by the project leads, there will be ample time for conviviality: food, drink, music, and great conversation. Attendees are encouraged to bring their families.
